Things are not looking good on the Carson Wentz injury news. Since suffering a foot injury in practice last week, Wentz will be undergoing surgery today and will miss 5-12 weeks, per ESPN's Ian Rapoport.
5-12 weeks is a wide timetable for return but this appears to be an injury that has been there for a long time. According to Colts' HC Frank Reich, this injury came up back in high school. Given Wentz's injury history, this doesn't seem like something Wentz should rush back from.
So how does this affect the Eagles side of things? Wentz missing a chunk of games directly affects the conditional second-round pick that could become a first acquired in the February trade for Wentz. Either one of the following is what needs to happen for the pick to turn into a first-rounder:
Wentz plays at least 75 percent of the Colts’ offensive snaps in 2021
Wentz plays at least 70 percent of the Colts’ offensive snaps AND the Colts make the playoffs in 2021
If the timetable for recovery is on the longer side of the 5-12 weeks given, then the Eagles can kiss the chance of a third 1st-round pick in 2022 goodbye.
On the bright side, the Eagles will have at least an additional 2nd-round pick and a monster contract for an injury-prone QB off the books heading into 2022.
