Doug Pederson will not be the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2021. According to reports, he will be parting ways with the Eagles after meeting with owner Jeff Lurie in South Florida. This comes after it was announced offensive senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello and senior offensive consultant Marty Mornhinweg will not return next season.
The Eagles will immediately start looking for a new head coach.
Pederson’s firing comes after ESPN’s Chris Mortensen and Tim McManus reported the first meeting between Jeff Lurie and Pederson, last week, did not go well. The report stated Lurie was not confident about Doug’s vision for the team.
Lurie has not been convinced on how Pederson planned to fix the offense and get the Eagles back to being a winner, according to the report. Another concern was Doug’s plan to address his coaching lacked urgency, according to these sources.
This all came after it was reported last week that QB Carson Wentz planned to ask for a trade because his relationship with Pederson is “fractured beyond repair”.
The Eagles finished 26th in scoring (20.9 points per game) in 2020. Wentz’s performance regressed significantly and was benched for the last four games of the season.
It is up in the air where Pederson will coach next. There are some rumors of him reuniting with Jets GM Joe Douglas in New York.
Pederson finishes his Eagles career with a 46-39-1 record over five seasons. He brought the city’s only Super Bowl when the Eagles defeated the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII in February 2018.
Pederson will go down as a legend in Philadelphia for his Super Bowl victory. Surely, he will never have to pay for another drink in the city.
