Week 1 Key Matchups: Eagles-Washington

The NFL season is here! Here are 4 matchups to watch for on Sunday.

T Jason Peters V. DE Chase Young

There is no question who will be playing LT. Coach Pederson said that Peters will be the blind side protector Sunday. Rookie phenom Chase Young will be battling the 38 year old vet, which you feel more comfortable than throwing Matt Pryor or Jordan Mailata at tackle. Peters has a decent 2019 campaign, but will be tested right off the bat with a talented front Washington can rotate.

CB Darius Slay V. WR Terry McLaurin

Eagles key acquisition this offseason (Slay) has the task to defend Washington’s top threat in McLaurin, who torched the Eagles secondary last season (10-255-2). McLaurin who versus Slay’s Lions in 2019 had 5-72, Eagles will need to contain the speedy threat who could give Washington some hope to shock week 1.

Eagles Linebackers V. Washington’s Tight Ends and Running Backs

One of the biggest questions of depth this offseason has been the Eagles LB unit. Philadelphia will primarily use 2 LBs and 5 DB’s in their base defense. Washington no longer has the talent of previous years (Vernon Davis, Jordan Reed, Adrian Peterson, Derrius Guice, Chris Thompson), but now have the likes of Logan Thomas, Jeremy Sprinkle, Peyton Barber, Antonio Gibson, and Bryce Love. Philadelphia has to be able to contain the run to throw off 2nd year pro Haskins, while the youth in the second level may lead to some mistakes there is no lack of speed in that unit to hang with Washington.

TE's Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert V. Washington's Safeties

Eagles Tight Ends versus Washington in 2019 racked up 17 receptions for 182 yards and a Touchdown in 2 contests. The key defender for Washington is Safety Landon Collins, while Troy Apke and Deshazor Everett. Ertz and Goedert are matchup nightmares as they both bring different skills to the table for opposing defenses, and you add the speed Philadelphia added in the off season opens up the defense. This matchup could pose serious problems for a defense that is reliant on their young talented pass rush.
